I woke up one morning when I was 7 years old to find that most of my hearing had disappeared. One day, I could hear birds chirping and the radio playing and the next day, I had to read my best friend’s lips to figure out what she was saying. Ten years later, there is still no explanation or cure for my sudden hearing loss. However, I have found a way to live the life of a regular high school student, with the love and support of my community, including my school, friends and family.
My goals in creating SophieSoundCheck.org are very simple. First, I want to tell teenagers how loud noises can permanently damage your hearing. Second, I want to explain how easy it is to take simple precautions to protect your ability to hear. (Learn more about us/ contact us)
Sophie SoundCheck is an offshoot of The National Organization for Hearing Research Foundation (NOHR). I have been their national spokesperson since age seven. Teenagers need to be especially careful. Our lives are filled with loud sounds – whether it’s from our iPods, cell phones, video games, music concerts, even school cafeterias.
Let’s start with my Sophie SoundCheck List.
HEAR we go!
